ABB MCB: How It Works and Complete Specifications

MCB ABB is an electrical device that every home must have to prevent fires due to electrical short circuits. What are the complete specifications?

The electrical system in any building, including homes, is at risk of experiencing short circuits. This short circuit can also trigger a fire, which can even burn down the house.

There have been many cases of house fires caused by electrical short circuits. According to data collected by the DKI Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), in the period January 1–August 14, 2024, there were a total of 490 fire incidents. 332 of these fire incidents were caused by electrical short circuits.

Recently, there was also an incident of a house burning down in Meruya, West Jakarta, due to an electrical short circuit in the ceiling of the house.

Of course you don't want that to happen in your home, right? Therefore, you can use ABB's MCB to protect your home's electrical installations!

For a more complete explanation of the Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB), see below!

What is MCB ABB?
MCB stands for Miniature Circuit Breaker, which is a tool in an electrical installation that is useful for limiting electric current and as a safety device when there is an overload. As an automatic power breaker, the MCB will cut off the electric current quickly when a disturbance occurs, such as a short circuit. The goal is to protect the electrical system and also electrical devices from damage that can be caused by the overload.

MCB ABB is usually equipped with two trip mechanisms, namely a delayed tripping mechanism for overload protection and a magnetic tripping mechanism that functions for short circuit protection.

Generally, MCB has nine nominal current options, including 1A, 2A, 4A, 6A, 10A, 16A, 20A, 25A, and 32A. This nominal current is determined from the current that can be delivered by the MCB.

How MCB ABB Works
Basically, MCB works automatically by cutting off the electric current when the current passing through is more than the nominal current on the device.

When there is excess current, the bimetal component in the MCB will bend and will break the MCB contact or trip. Other than the electromagnetic relay and bimetal components, there is also a solenoid that functions to disconnect the device when a short circuit occurs.

Simply put, the way the MCB ABB works is to cut off the electric current when there is a disturbance in the circuit, which prevents further cable damage or even fire.

Under normal conditions, the MCB will function as a manual switch that can connect (ON) and disconnect (OFF) the electric current. Then, when there is an overload or short circuit, the MCB will work automatically by cutting off the electric current.
