What Is AFDD?
AFDD stands for Arc Fault Detection Device. This tool detects and cuts off electricity when an abnormal electrical spark, known as an arc fault, happens in your wires or connections.
Unlike an MCB which only responds to overloads or short circuits, an AFDD is specially designed to catch small spark patterns that other devices often miss. When a dangerous pattern is detected, the AFDD will cut the circuit immediately.
A product like the CHINT NB4LE-AFD even combines three protection functions in one compact unit. These functions are spark detection (AFDD), overload protection (MCB), and leakage protection (RCCB).
Why Are Electrical Sparks Dangerous?
Electrical sparks in wires can happen for many reasons. Loose connections, pinched wires, old brittle insulation, or rodent bites are common causes.
The dangerous part is that these sparks often happen with very small electrical current. The current is not large enough to trip an MCB. But repeated sparks produce high heat. This heat can burn wire insulation and start a fire, with no clear warning until it is too late.
There are two types of sparks you need to watch out for:
Series sparks happen on a single damaged wire. The current is small and very hard for ordinary devices to detect.
Parallel sparks happen between two different wires. The energy is larger, but still often fails to trip an MCB.
Comparison of Protection Capabilities
| Device | Detects Sparks? | Overload Protection | Leakage Protection |
| MCB | No | Yes | No |
| RCCB | Only if leaking to ground | No | Yes |
| RCBO | No | Yes | Yes |
| AFDD | Yes (all types) | No* | No* |
*Note: The CHINT NB4LE-AFD integrates all three functions together.*
MCB and RCBO are completely blind to sparks that do not cause a full short circuit. RCCB can only detect sparks if there is a leak to the ground. Only AFDD is specially designed to detect dangerous spark patterns, anytime and anywhere they occur.
Why Does Your Home Need AFDD?
Fires caused by electrical problems often happen without warning. Homeowners usually do not realize there are sparks behind their walls or inside their ceilings until the fire has grown large.
AFDD fills the gap that MCB and RCCB cannot reach. It works 24 hours a day, monitoring every pulse of electricity in your home. When it detects a suspicious spark pattern, for example from a wire pinched under a chair or a loose outlet terminal, the AFDD will cut the power before the heat can burn anything.
The areas most recommended for AFDD installation are bedrooms, because fires are most dangerous while you sleep. Next are living rooms with many outlets, kitchens, and buildings with old wiring.
CHINT NB4LE-AFD: Complete Protection in One Device
The CHINT NB4LE-AFD is a circuit breaker with spark detection that already includes overload and leakage protection. In a single module measuring 36mm (2 poles), you get full protection without needing to connect three separate devices.
This device is available from 6A to 40A for 230/240V systems. It can interrupt short circuit currents up to 10kA. The CHINT NB4LE-AFD meets international standards IEC/EN61009-1 and IEC 62606, and holds CE and CB certification.
With its integrated design, installation becomes much neater. This device saves up to 60 percent of space in your electrical panel. Just as importantly, using an integrated AFDD reduces the number of wire connection points, which could otherwise become a new source of dangerous sparks.
Do not underestimate the danger of electrical sparks in your home's wiring. The MCB and RCCB you already have may not be enough to protect you from this risk. Add a layer of protection that is truly designed to detect dangerous sparks.
